The Université de Saint-Boniface Les Rouges are the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference women’s soccer champions.
According to mcacathletics.ca, the team capped an outstanding season by beating the Providence University Pilots 2-0 in the championship game on Oct. 27. Les Rouges went unbeaten during the season with 11 wins and one draw in the 2019 MCAC women’s soccer standings.
“It’s a pretty remarkable achievement,” Eric Lemoine, USB’s athletic director, told The Lance, as he praised both the defensive solidity and attacking prowess of the team. “We had a talented group of players, and everyone bought into the values of the team from the start.”
Lemoine said one of the factors of the team’s success this season was the blend of comparative youth and experience, and how players of different ages worked together to help support and bring out the best in each other’s development.
“For example, it’s very beneficial for new recruits coming into the program in their first university season to have the support from older players who might be in their third or fourth season,” he said.
“We’ve seen so much talent this season. The bench has been amazing, and the beauty is that everyone has contributed.”
Led by head coach Justin Légaré, there have been some standout performers on the pitch this season, including league MVP Katie Moniot — “her performances controlling games have been invaluable.”
All-conference player and team captain Mylène Chabot and all-conference player Cassie Nazeravich have all also had memorable seasons, he said.
At the business end of the pitch in the final, Angela Pionela and Moniot scored for Les Rouges in the championship game, while Stéphanie Jones bagged a hat trick in the semifinal against the Brandon University Bobcats on Oct. 26, which USB won 5-2.
“It’s been a pretty remarkable season, and our head coach has done a remarkable job. He’s instilled such a great work ethic in the players, which has had such a positive impact on the individual players and the collective impact on the team” Lemoine said.
