High school hockey, basketball playoffs continue

High school basketball playoffs started last week across Winnipeg.

In the Kilcona Peguis Athletic Conference Tier 1 boys varsity quarter-finals, Garden City got the best of Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute 88-46 on Feb. 28, while Maples beat Transcona 103-86, and Kildonan-East beat River East 87-70. In the semifinals, top-ranked Miles Macdonell beat Kildonan-East 81-64, while Garden City beat Maples 73-55 on March 2. The Buckeyes, ranked fourth in the province, will take on the Fighting Gophers, ranked sixth, for the KPAC Tier 1 banner on March 4.

In the KPAC Tier 2 boys varsity semis, Murdoch MacKay beat West Kildonan 60-52 to advance to the division final vs. Selkirk on March 4.

In the KPAC Tier 1 girls varsity qualifier, Maples beat Selkirk 34-27 on Feb. 28. In the semifinals, Miles Macdonell beat River East 51-48, while Garden City, ranked fifth in the province, beat Maples 50-24 on March 2 to set up another Buckeyes vs. Fighting Gophers KPAC final on March 4.

Meanwhile, West Kildonan beat Springfield 66-38 in the KPAC Tier 2 girls varsity semis, while Murdoch MacKay beat Kildonan-East 45-37 on March 2 to set up a West K vs. Murdoch division final.

In SCAC Tier 1 boys varsity playoffs, Dakota beat Steinbach 86-53 on Feb. 28 in a qualifying match. On March 2, Dakota beat J.H. Bruns 94-44, while Steinbach beat Glenlawn 69-59.

In SCAC Tier 2 boys varsity quarter-finals, Louis-Riel beat Béliveau 95-33, Nelson McIntyre beat Léo-Rémillard 79-78, Jeanne-Sauvé beat St. John’s-Ravenscourt 101-79 on Feb. 28. In the semifinals, Jeanne-Sauvé beat Nelson McIntyre 58-52 and Louis Riel beat Westgate 82-35 on March 2 to set up Jeanne-Sauvé vs. Louis Riel in the division final.

WHSHL playoffs moving along

The Winnipeg High School Hockey League’s 2021-22 playoffs continue this week.

In the Winnipeg Free Press division playoffs, Collège Béliveau took on West Kildonan in the semifinals. Béliveau won first game 5-2 on March 1, and finished the series off with a 3-2 OT win on March 3 to advance to the divisional final.

In the Price Division, Transcona Collegiate beat Pinawa 2-1 in that best-of-three quarter-final series to advance to the semifinals where they faced top ranked Centre scolaire Léo-Rémillard last week. Léo-Rémillard won the first game of the series 6-5 on March 1, then eliminated Transcona with a 6-1 win the next day. Meanwhile, Murdoch MacKay faced John Taylor, losing the first game 4-1 on March 1 before bowing out with a 2-1 OT loss the next day. Léo-Rémillard faces John Taylor in the final this week.

Women’s High School Hockey League playoffs speed ahead

The Winnipeg Women’s High School Hockey League began qualifying rounds for the 2022 playoffs on Feb. 22.

In the CTV A Division, quarter-final action last week, J.H. Bruns beat Collège Béliveau 6-3 in the first game of their best-of-three series on Feb. 28, but Béliveau battled back to win Game 2 4-2 on March 2 to even the series. But J.H. Bruns won the deciding game 4-1 on March 3 to advance to the semis. Collège Jeanne-Sauvé beat Churchill 5-1 on March 1 then again 4-2 on March 3 to advance. Centre scolaire Léo-Rémillard beat River East 6-5 in overtime to kick their series off on Feb. 28. River East fought back to win Game 2 3-2 on March 2 to force a deciding third game on March 4 (result not available at press time).

In the Winnipeg Free Press B Division, Collège Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau took on Sanford in the quarter-finals, with Sanford winning the first game 7-0 on Feb. 24 then again 7-1 on March 1 to eliminate CPET. Meanwhile, top ranked Garden City Gophers faced Shaftesbury Titans. Garden City won the first game of the best-of-three 4-0 on Feb. 22, while Shaftesbury evened the series with a 1-0 win the next day. Garden City won the series with a 3-2 victory on Feb. 25. The semifinal round begins on March 7.
