Basketball Manitoba held its annual awards gala on April 15 at the Manitoba Museum’s Alloway Hall.
Ramogi Nyagudi, of St. Paul’s High School, was named male player of the year. Kyu Fust, of Dakota Collegiate, was named female player of the year. Jordan Hernandez (Nelson McIntyre Collegiate) was named AAA male player of the year. Jazmin Birch (Collège Béliveau) was named AAA female player of the year.
Giovanni Ajiamah (St. Paul’s High School), Atok Makuer (John Taylor Collegiate), Noah Kankam (Sturgeon Heights), Samuel Sola (Sturgeon Heights), and Waris Njoya (Churchill High School) were named to the male All-Manitoba team.
Alyssa Doneza (Sisler High School), Izzi Fust (Dakota Collegiate), Paige Schatkowsky (Vincent Massey Collegiate), Jennifer Kallon (River East Collegiate), and Anna Mik0 (Westwood Collegiate) were named to the female All-Manitoba team.
John Salumu-Kasongo (Nelson McIntyre Collegiate) was named a male first team A/AA/AAA All-Manitoban, while Hassan Kone (Centre Scolaire Léo-Rémillard) was named to the second team. Kristine Navea (St. James Collegiate) was named a female first team A/AA/AAA All-Manitoban, while Jenna Goertzen (Nelson McIntyre Collegiate) and Tiffany Ortega (St. James Collegiate) were named to the second team.
Noah Kankam (Sturgeon Heights) and Tiffany Ortega (St. James Collegiate) won the Carl Ridd Award, which recognizes graduating players who excel both on the court and in the classroom while also being heavily involved in the community. The award comes with a $500 scholarship.
Jared Hiebert (Ste. Anne Collegiate) and Stephanie Mcknight (Miles Macdonell Collegiate) were winners of Donovan Gayle Memorial Scholarships, which are awarded annually to players who “best represent Donovan’s attributes of strength, resilience, positive attitude and perseverance,” and includes $500 towards post-secondary tuition.
David Day and Adam Dobriansky (Nelson McIntyre Collegiate) were named AAA boys coaches of the year. Stephen Tackie (Sturgeon Heights) was named AAAA boys coach of the year. Eric Sung (Dakota Collegiate) was named AAAA girls coach of the year. Brent Amos (Windsor Park Collegiate) won junior high boys coach of the year.
Giulia Falsarella Miguita and Mariam Mahmoud, both of Nelson McIntyre Collegiate, won the Morris Glimcher Student Manager Scholarship Award, which comes with a $500 prize.
Samuel Adesuyi (Miles Macdonell Collegiate) and Alyssa Doneza (Sisler High School) won Alex Samaniego Memorial Scholarships.
Patrick Mart (Sturgeon Heights Collegiate) won the Jim Bulloch Coaching Award.
Orion Remoquilloa (Garden City Collegiate) won the Lena Wenke Courage Award.
Murray Brown (Oak Park High School) won the Mike Spack Award, for contributions to the growth of basketball in Manitoba over a sustained period of time.
Ricardo Martinez (Sturgeon Heights Collegiate), Eric Sung (Dakota Collegiate), Myles Panganiban (Maples Collegiate), and Ashley Van Aggelan (St. James Collegiate) received coaching service awards recognizing 15 years of coaching. Kristen Asmundson (River East Collegiate), Michael Tan (Sisler High School), and Tami Pennell (Univeresity of Winnipeg) received coaching service awards recognizing 20 years of coaching. Stephen Tackle (Sturgeon Heights Collegiate) and Mark Neves (Daniel McIntyre Collegiate) were recognized for 25 years of coaching. Jennifer How (Westgate Mennonite Collegiate) was recognized for 30 years of coaching. Colin Mark (Sargent Park School) and Bryan Kornberger (Glenlawn Collegiate) were recognized for 35 years of coaching. Richard Gooch (Shaftesbury High School and University of Winnipeg) was recognized for 55 years of coaching.
