Giants face Legionaires in MJBL final

The St. Boniface Legionaires won the first game of the Manitoba Junior Baseball League final on Monday, July 24, beating the Elmwood Giants 7-1 at Koskie Field.
Both MJBL semifinals went down to the wire last week, requiring fifth and deciding games on Friday, July 21.
The Legionaires squeaked out a 6-5 win over Carillon Sultans in their decider in Steinbach, while the Giants downed the Altona Bisons 10-8 at Access Field in Altona.
St. Boniface opened its series against Carillon with a 6-4 loss on July 17. The Sultans followed up with a 9-4 win the next day to put the Legionaires on the brink of elimination. St. B answered back with a 4-1 win to keep the dream alive on July 19, then won again 6-5 on July 20 to force a fifth game.
Elmwood won the opening game of its series with the Bisons by a 5-3 scoreline. Altona answered back with a 5-4 win the next day, ending a 12-game winning streak for the Giants that dated back to the regular season. With the best-of-five series tied 1-1, Elmwood answered back with a 2-1 win at home at Koskie Field to put Altona on the brink of elimination, but the Bisons came up big with a 3-2 win to force the deciding game.
The MJBL playoffs began July 12 with a best-of-three quarter-final round. The Giants swept the Pembina Valley Orioles, winning 3-0 and 3-2, while the Sultans swept the South Winnipeg Wolves without allowing a single run against, winning 12-0 and 6-0.
The best-of-five MJBL final started on July 24 and will run this week until a winner is decided.
