Three-quarters-of-a-century on, the St. Vital Mustangs Football Club is still going strong.
To help celebrate the occasion, the Mustangs are busy organizing a 75th anniversary/homecoming event.
Club officials are thrilled that construction of the team’s new turf home field will be celebrated at the event, which they acknowledge as a big milestone, but it’s the rich history of the Mustangs and the club’s longevity that will be the principal focus.

The 2016 St. Vital Mustangs bantam football team is pictured after winning that year’s provincial championship at IG Field. The club is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year and is hosting a homecoming weekend Aug. 17-19 at its new field and clubhouse.
“The new field is an integral part, but the continuation of the club is the main celebration,” club president Craig Bachynski said in an email interview.
A gala dinner will be held at the Mustangs clubhouse in Maple Grove Park (100 Frobisher Rd.) on Thursday, Aug. 17 and the homecoming weekend portion of proceedings will be held on Friday, Aug. 18 and Saturday, Aug. 19. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at the clubhouse and field on the 18th, followed by age-group football action — a crunchers-level jamboree and a majors game.
Bachynski said that several generations of some families have been involved with the Mustangs in some capacity through the club’s long history.
“Obviously, 75 years is a big event. To a lot of people, football was a great outlet for their kids. Lifelong friendships have been made, and a sense of pride was instilled into the players over the years — a pride that has lasted into their adulthood. As we say at the Mustangs — red runs deep.”
Visit www.mustangsfootball.ca for more information, or to purchase tickets.
Tickets for the gala dinner are $175 plus GST, and the purchase deadline is Aug. 4.
