Here at the Free Press Community Review, we remember the community centre winter carnivals of our youth — the outdoor hockey tournaments featuring multiple-games in one day (and resultant frozen feet), the steaming hot chocolate and warm hot dogs, trying our hand at Bingo, spending our last quarter on a 50/50 draw and being a wallflower at the Saturday night dance.
Times have changed, but the principal elements of community centre winter carnivals remain pretty much the same.
What follows is a list of all the carnivals and winter-themed events for which we could obtain details by our deadline:

It’s winter carnival season, and many local community centres are preparing themselves for activities suh as hockey tournaments, dances, socials and good old jam-pail (or milk-jug, as above) curling tournaments.
CORYDON (1370 Grosvenor Ave., 1170 Corydon Ave., 1 Sir John Franklin Rd.) — Winterfest, Jan. 22 to 28. More info at corydoncc.com
FORT GARRY (880 Oakenwald St.) — Winter Carnival, Sat., Jan. 27, 1 to 9 p.m. Adult shinny tournament from 1 to 6 p.m.;activities including cross country skiing, petting zoo, beer garden, carnival games, and more. More info at fortgarrycc.ca
HEADINGLEY (153 Seekings St.) — Phoenix Winter Carnival, Feb. 2 to 11. Fireworks and free family barbecue on Friday, Feb. 9. U7 and U9 hockey tournament, ringette tournament. Fireman’s Pancake Breakfast, 50/50 raffle, toboggan run, and more. More info at phoenixrec.org
RIVERVIEW (90 Ashland Ave.) — Winterfest, Jan. 19 to Feb. 3. Movie night (Ice Age) on Friday, Jan. 19. Women’s 4×4 hockey tournament Saturday, Jan. 20. The Frost Bite River Run will take place on Sunday, Jan. 21 at 10 a.m. Family skate night on Saturday, Jan. 27. Family ski day on Sunday, Jan. 28. ROBLIN PARK (640 Pepperloaf Cres.) — Winter Carnival, Jan. 15-21. Celebrate the 75th anniversary of Roblin Park C.C.; featuring U7 and U9 hockey tournament, kids’ carnival dance party, family magic show, family bingo night, bonfire and fireworks, pancake breakfast, broomball social and casino night.
