High school football champs crowned

The Winnipeg High School Football League wrapped up its 2024 season on Nov. 7 with a handful of championship games at Princess Auto Stadium.
In the ANAVETS Bowl for the top AAAA teams, perennial powerhouse Oak Park Raiders took on the defending champion Dakota Lancers. Dakota won the game 11-3 to repeat as provincial high school football champions.
Both teams were undefeated over the course of the 2024 season, with Dakota only allowing eight points, while Oak Park didn’t allow a single point against in seven games. Oak Park defeated Vincent Massey Trojans 52-8 in the quarter-finals, then dispatched St. Paul’s Crusaders 24-10 in the semifinals, while Dakota beat Springfield Sabres 72-0 in the quarter-finals, then beat Grant Park Pirates 39-12 in the semis.

Meanwhile, Dakota’s junior varsity 12-person squad beat Oak Park’s in the JV12 final by a score of 39-33 on Oct. 30.
In junior varsity nine-person action, Miles Macdonell Buckeyes took on Vincent Massey Vikings in the final on Nov. 7. Brandon’s Viking won the match 40-16.
In the Currie Bowl for the top AAA teams, the John Taylor Pipers took on the Tec Voc Hornets on Nov. 7. Tec Voc took home the win, beating John Taylor 24-11.
John Taylor beat Beaver Brae Broncos 19-10 in the quarter-finals, then defeated Dryden Eagles 25-12 in the semifinals, while Tec Voc beat St. Norbert Celtics 30-7 in the quarter-finals, then Fort Frances Muskies 23-7 in the semis.
The Vidruk Bowl saw two Brandon, Man., squads face off, with the Vincent Massey Vikings defeating the Crocus Plains Plainsmen 21-10. The Bramwell Bowl featured the Kelvin Clippers beating the Kildonan-East Reivers 37-14. In the Gustafson Bowl, the Miles Macdonell Buckeyes beat Murdoch MacKay 41-21. All three games took place at Princess Auto Stadium on Oct. 31.
