Junior varsity basketball champs crowned

The Manitoba High School Athletic Association’ junior varsity boys and girls basketball champions were crowned in all four categories last week.
The Dakota Lancers took the AAAA JV girls title with a 72-45 win over Kelvin on March 18. Dakota’s Madison Rach was named the tournament’s most valuable player, and Kishi Folarin (Vincent Massey-Winnipeg), Abigail Magat (Garden City), Kate Coghill (Dakota), Sylvie Classen (Kelvin) and Taylor Walters (Kelvin) were tournament all-stars.
The AAAA JV boys’ crown was won by the Maples Marauders, who defeated the St. Paul’s Crusaders 73-64, also on March 18. Veer Brar of Maples was the tournament MVP and Vincent Obiekwe (Pembina Trails), Connor Joubert (Dakota), Surkhab Gill (Maples), Elias Brana (St. Paul’s) and Jonathan Sobowale (St. Paul’s) were tournament all-stars.

In AAA JV girls’ action, the Linden Christian Wings took home the championship banner by beating the Dauphin Clippers 59-47 on March 15 in Dauphin, Man. On the boys’ side, the St. Norbert Celtics eked out a 70-66 win over the Collège Louis-Riel Voyageurs in Niverville, Man.
The AA/A girls title was won by the Souris Sabres, who defeated a combined team from Glenboro/Carberry/Baldur by just two points, 38-36 on March 15 in Souris, Man. The boys AA/A champs were the combined team from Glenboro/Baldur, which defeated the Immanuel Christian Falcons 45-37 on March 15 in Sprague, Man.
The MHSAA’s varsity basketball championship tournaments were all still running at press time. The AAAA boys and girls championship games were slated for Monday, March 24 at the University of Manitoba. In the girls’ final, the Dakota Lancers faced Winnipeg’s Vincent Massey Trojans, while the Kildonan East Reivers faced Dakota on the boys’ side.
