JV basketball MVP is ready to soar

Veer Brar is a 14-year-old, Grade 9 student athlete at Maples Collegiate.

“School is going well, I enjoy going to class every day and getting to learn. My favourite class would be my science class with Ms. Russell,” he said. “I say science because it teaches me how the world works from a different perspective. I really enjoy going to Maples because of the environment. The teachers and coaches support us as student athletes and encourage us to do well both academically and athletically.”

Veer loves basketball and he just helped the Maples Marauders junior varsity boys team win the AAAA provincial high school championship, with a 73-64 victory over the St. Paul’s Crusaders on March 18. Veer, a point guard, was named most valuable player of the provincial tournament.

Veer has a deep appreciation of his teammates and coaches.

“I played multiple sports through school up until this year,” he said. “I’m now heavily focused on basketball. I enjoy playing basketball because I grew up around it, with my whole family playing. so it was hard to not fall in love with it.

“I enjoy being a point guard because I am able to control the offence and make reads out of it to involve my teammates,” he said.

Because of his family’s love for the game, Veer has been playing basketball since he was very small.

“I’ve played for Attack Basketball for 11 years now and coach Sukhvir Singh has been a big part in my development when it comes to basketball,” he said. “My dad, Davinder Brar, has also been a huge influence on my game. Through this summer, before my first year at Maples, Coach Kirkpatrick and Coach Sousa opened the gym for training sessions and runs multiple times a week. Doing this allowed our team to get a head start in chemistry, as you can see from this past season.

“I am fortunate that my teammates through my basketball career so far have been a lot of the same players. We are close and we have great chemistry.”

Veer also wanted to mention his uncles, Amarjit and Amrit Basi, who have served as assistant coaches with his Attack team the past two years.

Veer lives in the Maples with his mom, Monica, dad Davinder, and sisters Seva and Asha.

“My parents are the reason I’m able to play basketball,” he said. “They do the little things that help me be successful when it’s game time. My mom makes sure my meals are all ready for long days because of practices after school and my dad drives me and my teammates to practices and games whenever we need. I’m very thankful for them both.”

Veer’s next goal is to make Team Manitoba and compete at the 2025 national championships in Toronto in August.

Veer has a tremendous future ahead of him. He has this advice for other athletes:

“Have fun, enjoy the game and work in silence.”
