Isabella Johnston is a 17-year-old who recently graduated from J.H. Bruns Collegiate.

“I really enjoyed high school,” she said. “All of my classes went very well and I was able to achieve honours with distinction each year. My favourite class is chemistry. I love the math component to chemistry and I really enjoyed learning about the building blocks of matter.”

J.H. Bruns Collegiate alumna Isabella Johnston is now playing soccer for Trinity Western University in Langley, B.C.

“In high school I played volleyball, hockey, flag football, indoor and outdoor soccer, and competed in track and field,” she said. “I was the co-captain of my hockey team with my best friend. I was also captain of the flag football team, and our indoor and outdoor soccer teams. Outside of high school, I played club soccer for 1V1 Futbol Dreams Academy, and FC Manitoba.”

Isabella is now into a new exciting phase of her life.

“This season I am now playing soccer for the Trinity Western Spartans in Langley, B.C., while pursuing a degree in human kinetics. I am now most focused on soccer. I have been playing soccer for my whole life, and it has always been my passion. I love my teammates, and playing in front of fans. I love the way it feels to step on the field right before a big game. Soccer has always been my coping mechanism. I play fullback and sometimes winger. I love fullback, because it gives me a chance to defend, while also providing me with the opportunity to make runs and add to the offensive side of the game. I want to thank all my amazing teammates over the years and my coaches at 1V1 (Nano Romero, Enrique Garcea, and Rob Carreira) they helped to push me to be the best I can be and I am forever grateful.”

Isabella’s family lives in Island Lakes. She is very close to her dad Mark, mom Ivone, and sister Katrina.

“My parents and sister are the reason I am where I am today,” she said. “You guys have always been by my side, through good times and bad times and I am honestly so grateful to have such a loving and supportive family. I couldn’t ask for anything more.”

Isabella is going to keep working really hard and hopes to help bring a national championship to the Spartans. She has this advice to share with younger athletes:

“Take it one day at a time. There is so much you will experience not only with sports but with growing up, and it is pretty easy to get overwhelmed once in a while. Always try to stay present and believe in yourself and everything will work out in the end. Just remember to work hard, have fun, and most importantly believe in yourself.”
