The puck has dropped on the 2025-26 Manitoba Women’s High School League season, and the annual excitement generated by a fresh new chapter is in the air.
The year’s edition of the league features 29 teams — the largest number in the league’s history — as well as a structural change. This season, the MWHSHL will feature a Division 1/2 East, a Division 1/2 West, and a Division 3.
Brad Nechwediuk, the league’s president, explained the change was brought about by “the amount of teams that requested each division.”

The CJS Olympiens celebrated winning the 2024-25 MWHSHL league championship and the Wayne Thompson Cup at Seven Oaks Arena in March. The 2025-26 season is already under way.
The leagues will divide into Divisions 1 and 2 for playoffs later in the season, he said.
There is also a new team this year — the Gabrielle-Roy/Pointe-des-Chenes Cavaliers, a co-op team combining players from Île-des-Chênes (Gabrielle Roy) and St. Anne (Pointe-des-Chênes).
The Cavaliers are joined in Division 1/2 East by the Dakota Lancers, CSLR Renards, Miles Mac Buckeyes, Glenlawn Lions, River East Kodiaks, CJS Olympiens, J.H. Bruns Broncos, WKC Wolverines, CPET Canadiens, Lorette Scorpions, and Selkirk Royals.
Division 1/2 West is comprised of Churchill Bulldogs, Sanford Sabres, VMC Trojans, GCC Gophers, Shaftesbury Titans, Warren Wildcats, John Taylor Pipers, SMA Flames, Westwood Warriors, Oak Park Raiders, and Sturgeon Heights Huskies.
Division 3 is made up of the Beausejour Barons, Murdoch Mackay, SJR Eagles, Béliveau Barracudas, PCI Saints, and Division Springfield Sabres.
“People are excited, and there are a few nerves, which in some ways, is very good for people,” said Nechwediuk, who is also head coach of the Glenlawn Lions girls’ team.
Last season’s Division 1 champions, the CJS Olympiens, will be looking defend to their title this time. They beat the Lions 2-1 in last season’s best-of-three championship final.
“CJS will be up there, and we also have a strong squad again,” Nechwediuk said, adding he expects teams such as Vincent Massey and St. Mary’s to also be in the mix for the title.
