High school hockey playoffs heating up

High school hockey players across Winnipeg and beyond are deep into playoff action.

The Winnipeg High School Hockey League’s top Platinum Promotions division wrapped up its championship series last week, with the Oak Park Raiders prevailing over the Vincent Massey Trojans in the best-of-three final. The two teams finished at the top of the regular season standings before blazing through the playoffs.

Defending league champs Massey won the first game 3-2 on March 2. Oak Park evened the series with a 3-2 win on March 4 to force the deciding match on March 5, which the Raiders won 6-4.

Both teams will be looking to take home to the AAAA provincial title this weekend, with Oak Park hosting the annual best-of-the-province tourney March 13 to 16.

Winnipeg Free Press division semifinals took place last week as well. The top-ranked Louis-Riel Voyageurs, who lost only one game all season, beat the Kelvin Clippers 2-0 on March 3 and 5-2 on March 4 to advance to the final. Meanwhile, the Springfield Sabres took on the Dakota Lancers, winning 4-3 in overtime on March 3, while Dakota evened the series with a 3-1 win on March 5. The result of the final game on March 6 was not available at press time.

The Price Division semifinal round was also held last week. The West Kildonan Wolverines upset the top-ranked Niverville Panthers, with West K winning the first game 7-3 on March 3 and 4-3 on March 4 to advance to the final. Meanwhile, Lorette Scorpions took on the Warren Wildcats. Warren won the first game 5-4 in overtime, but Lorette evened the series at 1-1 with a 3-2 win on March 3 before winning the deciding match 4-2 on March 5.

In the Manitoba Women’s High School Hockey League, Division 1 quarter-finals went down last week.

The Vincent Massey Trojans took on the Gabrielle Roy/Pointe-des-Chênes Cavaliers, winning the first game 4-2 on March 3, then 5-0 on March 5. The Collège Jeanne-Sauvé Olympiens played the Sanford Sabres, with Sanford winning 3-2 on March 3 and CJS evening the series with a 4-3 win on March 5. Oak Park Raiders took on the Glenlawn Lions, with Glenlawn winning 5-0 on March 3 and Oak Park evening the series with a 6-1 win on March 5. And the St. Mary’s Academy Flames defeated the J.H. Bruns Broncos, winning 7-4 on March 2 and 5-4 in OT on March 4. Further results were not available at press time.

In Division 2 quarter-finals, following a week of qualifying play, the CPET Canadiennes beat the Lorette Scorpions, winning 3-2 on March 2 and 3-2 in OT on March 4. The Shaftesbury Titans beat the John Taylor Pipers, winning 6-5 on March 3 and 3-2 in OT on March 4. The Churchill Bulldogs played the Centre scolaire Leo-Remillard Renards, with CSLR winning the first game 1-0 and Churchill winning 1-0 on March 5 to even the series. The Dakota Lancers took on the Miles Macdonell Buckeyes, earning a 5-2 win on March 2. Miles Mac evened the series with a 4-1 win on March 4. Further results were not available at press time.

In Division 3, two quarter-final series’ took place last week, with Murdoch MacKay eliminated Beausejour decisive 7-0 and 6-0 wins on March 2 and 3. The Portage Collegiate Institute Saints battling the Beliveau Barracudas. PCI won 1-0 on March 2, but Beliveau forced the deciding game with a 3-2 OT win the next day. Results of the deciding match were not available at press time.
