Wesmen basketball players receive honours
Two University of Winnipeg Wesmen basketball players recently earned national honours for their performances on the court.
Sean Tarver, a fifth-year forward, was named the Canada West men’s first star of the week as well as the U Sports male top male athlete for the week ending Dec. 2. Both mentions are a first for Tarver, who is originally from Baltimore and is in his third season with the Wesmen.

He had back-to-back career highs during games against the Brandon University Bobcats on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. Tarver got 24 points and 18 rebounds on Friday and 33 points and 13 rebounds on Saturday.
“On any given night, Sean has given us a variety of contributions and he has become a player that every team knows they’ll have to account for when they play us. We’re very proud of this U Sports accomplishment and we congratulate him on it,” Wesmen head coach Mike Raimbault said in a statement.
Tarver is averaging 19.5 points and a team-leading 9.3 rebounds per game through 12 conference games.
Wesmen women’s basketball player Faith Hezekiah was named Canada West’s second female star of the week for the same period.
The fourth-year forward scored 26 points and got 15 rebounds during the women’s game against the Bobcats on Nov. 30; and then scored a career-high the next night with 35 points and 12 rebounds against Brandon.
She has scored double digits in all 12 conference matches so far and Saturday’s game marked the fourth time this season she’s scored 30-plus points — a Canada West high.
The Wesmen women’s basketball team is currently 12th in its conference with a 4-8 record while the men’s team is sitting in third with an 8-4 record.
Charleswood Curling Club to host championship
The Charleswood Curling Club (4000 Grant Ave.) will host 32 of the province’s top men’s curling teams during the 2020 Viterra Championship.
The 2020 event will be the first time the club hosts the men’s tournament, but it previously hosted the Manitoba Scotties Tournament of Hearts in 2017.

“We know the committee will create another memorable event for all fans and curlers in the province,” said Craig Baker, executive director of CurlManitoba in a statement.
The Viterra Championship will take place at the Eric Coy arena from Feb. 4 to 6, 2020. The winner of the tournament will go on to represent Manitoba at the 2020 Tim Hortons Brier in Kingston, Ont., from Feb. 29 to March 8.
“It is exciting for us to be hosting a provincial championship once again,” said Scott Barenz, president of the Charleswood Curling Club. “Our committee of hardworking volunteers are prepared to put on a great event in Winnipeg.”
Tickets for the 2020 Viterra Championship will be available in fall 2019.
