Oak Park basketballer gets athlete of the week nod
Emily Johnson has come out swinging in her final year of basketball with the Oak Park Raiders. The forward, who stands 5-11, was named athlete of the week by the Manitoba High School Athletic Association on Jan. 16 for her contributions to the Raiders’ impressive start to the 2018-19 season. At press time, the team was sitting first in the AAAA conference with five regular season wins and two tournament victories.
Johnson is averaging 19 points, eight rebounds, four steals and four assists per game.
“Emily is a very accomplished player who can adapt her game to meet the requirements of the game,” Oak Park varsity girls basketball coach Murray Brown said in a statement. “She is outstanding in the open court, extremely fast with great vision which results in great scoring opportunities in transition.
Brown also praised Johnson’s 15-foot shooting range and abilities as a defender.
“Emily is an excellent player and student, but an even better person.”
Johnson maintains a 97 per cent academic average while also participating in ultimate Frisbee.
Wesmen to honour longtime volleyball coach
The University of Winnipeg athletics department will add the final member to its inaugural Wesmen Ring of Honour this week.
Longtime volleyball coach Mike Burchuk will become the fourth inductee into during a ceremony prior to the Wesmen men’s volleyball match against the Brandon Bobcats on Jan. 24 at 7:45 p.m.
During his nine-year tenure as head coach (1980 to 1989), Burchuk oversaw the most successful era in Wesmen women’s volleyball history, guiding the program to six straight national championships. In that time, he was named the CIAU national coach of the year four times.
Burchuk will join Diane Scott, Sandra Carroll and Tom Kendall in the Ring that overlooks the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium where the Wesmen play their home games.
All Wesmen volleyball alumni are invited to the Jan. 24 matches and will get in free of charge with access to our Courtside Club as VIP.
