Venla Hovi, Justus Alleyn athletes of the year

The University of Manitoba Bisons wrapped up the athletic year and gave out the year-end major awards on March 24 at the annual Brown and Gold Banquet.

The winners are: Venla Hovi, Bison Sports female athlete of the year; Justus Alleyn, Bison Sports male athlete of the year; Jon Rempel (women’s hockey), Bison Sports coach of the year; Lauren Taraschuk, Bison Sports female rookie of the year; Brenda Warren Bison Sports male rookie of the year; the Pat Gill Legacy Award was presented to Bison team physician for the men’s hockey team Dr. Mike McKay; the Student-Athlete Leadership and Community Development award was given to Alana Serhan, Brett Stovin and Gee-ef Nkwonta.

The inaugural winner of Bison Sports assistant coach of the year is Alana Boudreau from the track and field program.

Kings A2 peewee team city champs

The South Winnipeg Kings A2 peewee team has another banner to hang in the barn after defeating St. Vital on March 20 in game five of the Hockey Winnipeg City Championship, 2-1.

The Kings are coached by Mike Whalen, Reid McMurchy, and Jason Kohoko.

South Winnipeg snags A2 midget city championship

They may have left it to the final minutes, but the South Winnipeg Kings A2 midget team are the new city champions.

On March 20 at the Dutton Arena, the Kings met the R.M. of Macdonald Catfish in the final of the five game series.

The Kings scored late in the third with just three minutes left to take a 2-1 lead and then put the puck in an empty net to finish off 3-1.

The team is coached by Darren Wareham, Glenn Care, and Ryan Arabsky.
