St. Boniface city councillor Matt Allard joined Indigenous elders on June 5 to recognize the renaming of the park at 100 Comanche Rd. in Niakwa Park to Tikina’gaan Park.

The request to rename the park formerly known as Papoose Park was approved by city council in September, 2022. The new name (pronounced tee-gi-nah-gan) was recommended by elders in the spirit of honouring Indigenous children. A tikina’gaan is a traditional cradleboard used by Indigenous peoples throughout North America. It is typically made of wood with cushioned backing and, babies are secured in the cradleboard by leather ties.
