Marauders memories will overflow

Hey there, time traveller!

The memories will flow, and stories will be shared on Sept. 20 when members of the River East Marauders midget hockey team reunite to celebrate their magical 1975-76 season.
The festivities take place at Jeffrey’s Restaurant beginning at 7 p.m. Turn left once you enter the restaurant.
What a season it was, reunion organizer Kim Kozak said. The squad packed its trophy case with championships. With a full roster of Red River valley players, the Marauders won the 1976 Manitoba Midget Wrigley Tournament, forerunner of what today is known as the Telus Cup. From there, they won the Brandon/Minnedosa Tournament of Champions (and you can still see the trophy at Terry Sawchuk Arena).

Members of the 1975-76 River East Marauders midget hockey team will share plenty of memories on Sept. 20, perhaps none more than those of the day they played a midget team from the Soviet Central Red Army club.
That was just a warmup. Riding the momentum of their tournament successes, the Marauders were crowned the 1976 Greater Winnipeg Minor Hockey Association champions and then they captured the Manitoba Amateur Hockey Association crown.
That would be more than enough for one season, but there was yet another memorable day. On Feb. 22, 1976, the Marauders played the Soviet Central Red Army midgets at the Winnipeg Arena, where they drew an enthusiastic crowd of 7,205, in the days before the old barn’s upper decks had been added.
In order to play the Russians, the Marauders had to win the Wrigley Cup — which was itself a special experience, as the team flew to Calgary in matching outfits on CP Air. While the Russians beat the Marauders 6-4, the score didn’t detract from the experience.
“The game was phenomenal,” Kozak said. “Dan Diamond from CBC did a radio documentary, and Scott Oake did a video documentary.”
Kozak said that interest in the reunion is high. One coach, two trainers and 14 players have confirmed their attendance. Two teammates live in Australia and Spain and cannot attend, while one recently passed away. Two younger call-ups haven’t yet been located.
Attending in spirit is Kozak’s dad Al, who was the team’s head coach. Known for his cool demeanour, Coach Kozak often posted motivational quotes in the dressing room. They were so special that his son has saved them for nearly 50 years.
“Dad is looking down on us with a big smile on his face, knowing we’re having this conversation,” Kozak said.

A 1976 exhibition between the River East Marauders and Central Red Army midget hockey teams was front page sports news in February 1976.
Kozak looks forward to getting reacquainted with many friendly faces. Many are bringing mementos from the season, and especially the game against the Russians.
“I have a program, game sheet, and some newspaper clippings,” Kozak said. “We exchanged hockey sticks and a souvenir puck. I have asked everyone to bring memorabilia.
“The foundation of the evening is to get together after 47 years,” Kozak said. “There will be sharing of memorabilia, stories, and a lot of laughter and smiles. Hopefully, we can look forward to a 50th celebration.”
There is always room for more. If you want more details, contact Kozak at kozakk@mymts.net.
