As the summer comes to an end, I’m happy to reflect on a season filled with connections and community events. It has been a great summer, marked by many opportunities to engage with constituents and attend local events.

Folklorama was a real highlight. This annual celebration of global cultures allowed me to experience the diversity that defines our province. I was honoured to attend over nine pavilions this year, including those representing Egypt, Spirit of Ukraine, Portugal and Ukraine-Kyiv, each showcasing the expanding cultural mosaic of Manitoba.

In addition to these cultural festivities, I had the pleasure of meeting many of my valued constituents. These conversations have been insightful and inspiring as we work to address our community’s needs and advance our collective goals.

As we look ahead, I am excited about health-care developments coming to South Winnipeg and Fort Garry. Ever since I was first elected, I have been committed to reopening the Victoria Hospital emergency room. The previous government’s closure of the Victoria ER left a significant gap in emergency care, and our government is dedicated to reversing this decision.

Budget 2024 includes investments aimed at revitalizing the Victoria Hospital as a cornerstone of health care in our region. These include the reopening of the ER, the reinstatement of the Mature Women’s Centre, and the creation of the Anne Oake Family Recovery Centre. These initiatives will collectively form a South Winnipeg Health Campus designed to meet the evolving needs of our community.

This will be a transformative project for our area, which is currently one of the fastest-growing neighbourhoods in the province. The new ER at Victoria Hospital will provide timely emergency care, improving efficiency and reducing wait times. The Mature Women’s Centre will offer specialized care for women and gender-diverse individuals, addressing the gap in services that has been felt since its closure. The Anne Oake Family Recovery Centre will provide comprehensive addiction treatment services for women, focusing on supporting families by allowing children to stay with their mothers during treatment. This approach will help keep families together and ensure essential care is accessible without additional barriers.

This health campus initiative is about restoring services and enhancing them to reflect our commitment to compassionate, community-centred care. It is a vital step in ensuring that our growing population receives the timely and effective support it needs.

Together, we are progressing toward a healthier, more connected community that can look forward to a future filled with promise and advancement for Fort Garry!
