On April 1, Canadian Forces Base Winnipeg marked its 100th anniversary.

From its role in the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP) to the critical support provided during 2024’s Op LENTUS response to Canadian natural disasters, CFB Winnipeg has always been at the heart of Canadian military aviation.

Today, CFB Winnipeg is home to 1 Canadian Air Division and the Canadian NORAD region headquarters, ensuring the defence of North America. It is also home to 2 Canadian Air Division, the foundation of RCAF training and education. It also plays a critical role in search and rescue operations across the country and is a key training hub for future RCAF air operations officers, air combat systems officers, and airborne electronic sensor operators.

Personnel at the base are now looking ahead to other Future Aircrew Training program (FaCT) and the modernization of search and rescue operations with the adoption of the CC-295 Kingfisher aircraft.

To commemorate the anniversary, the CFB Winnipeg command team of Col. Jody Hanson, and chief warrant officer Philippe Cousineau commissioned a base-wide contest to design a patch celebrating the anniversary. A design by Capt. Miguel Moldez of 38 Canadian Brigade Group was selected the winner, and Hanson and Cousineau handed out the patches to members to wear throughout the year.
