West End mural receives city-wide recognition

A West End mural has been selected as the 2021 Mural of the Year by Murals of Winnipeg.

Viking Spirit, located on the Scandinavian Cultural Centre at 764 Erin St., received the highest number of votes from 32 independent judges who scrutinized 43 new outdoor murals from 2021.

Muralist Charlie Johnston was presented with the award at a celebratory luncheon at the Scandinavian Cultural Centre on June 22.

“Charlie Johnston is an artist both in his art and in his person, who passionately bonded with our ideas to create this masterpiece of our rich cultural heritage,” Scandinavian Cultural Centre mural committee chair Sonja Lundstrom said in a news release.
