The Assiniboia Residential School commemorative site was unveiled on Sept. 30, the second National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
The site’s creation was led by the Assiniboine Residential School Legacy Group. The monument and gathering place, which honours the school’s survivors, includes a sacred fire pit surrounded by bricks and metal markers etched with the names of students and the communities they came from.

The second phase of the site’s construction will see electrical work done, instructive signage and completed landscaping.
The project is slated to cost $1.3 million with fundraising underway. The provincial government committed $25,000 to the project, Indigenous Reconciliation and Northern Relations Minister Alan Lagimodiere announced in August, and other levels of government have also committed financial support.
Donations to support the project and the Assiniboine Residential School Legacy Group can be made online through The Winnipeg Foundation.
