An Elie, Man. teacher has been nationally recognized for his commitment to education.

Jeff Baty was selected as a winner of the Staples Canada We Love Teachers contest for his ability to “inspire students to pursue their passions and seek post-secondary education by creating an exciting, open and nurturing class environment where students feel they can truly prosper,” according to a news release.

Baty was one of eight teachers from across Canada to be honoured with the award, which acknowledges the vital role teachers play in providing inclusive, quality education and improving the lives of children. In spring, Staples Canada asked parents, students and educators to nominate a teacher in their community making an impact for the first We Love Teachers contest.

“Teaching or working in education in general is not something done for recognition, and I certainly was never expecting anything. It was a surprise to be nominated, let alone to be a successful candidate for Staples,” Baty said.

“I think the hope for many teachers is at its core rather simple: to make a difference. The tricky part becomes measuring that. I think that a student bringing your name forward is at least one such way, and for that I’m really appreciative, in large part as it is a nod to some of the things that are happening in class. I was thrilled to win as it enabled me to further outfit my class to be able to deliver a better program to students moving forward.”

The winning teachers will now have a chance to win a $1,000 Staples gift card for their classroom or to upgrade any technology and $250 in cash. Their nominators also win a $100 Staples gift card.
