Cork and Flame shines bright at Christmas

Cork and Flame restaurant and bar is cooking for families in need this magical Christmas season, providing nearly 100 families with hot meals delivered to their doorsteps.
Kyriakos Vogiatzakis, owner of Cork and Flame, said the inspiration for this initiative came from a desire to bless others in the St. James community. Cork and Flame was only open for nine months before the pandemic hit and Vogiatzakis said the St. James community was extremely supportive during that time.
“I wanted to pass on these blessings to less fortunate people in our community who needed these same blessings as well,” Vogiatzakis said.

Originally the plan was to help 50 families, but he says the number is now closer to 100. Vogiatzakis also put out a call for locally owned businesses to do the same thing in their own communities.
“It’s important to remember that we don’t know what families are going through in their lives,” Vogiatzakis said.
The hot meals will be handed out by volunteers on Christmas Eve. Many of the volunteers are regular Cork and Flame customers and Vogiatzakis said they were quick to help when he called for volunteers.
“It’s just the spirit of Christmas,” Vogiatzakis said. “It’s a magical time of the year.”
Vogiatzakis said the meals will be nutritious and the same quality diners would receive in the restaurant – including things such as turkey, vegetables, potatoes, and desserts.
Cork and Flame is also accepting new and unwrapped toys to be given out with the meals on Christmas Eve. Winnipeggers looking to help can donate toys or any other Christmas necessities at 3106 Portage Ave.
Vogiatzakis intends to continue this initiative next year – but make it bigger.
“Everyone wants to be a part of something that is magical and is done right and for the right reasons,” Vogiatzakis said.
