Devon Clunis, former chief of the Winnipeg Police Service, and his wife Pearlene helped more than 100 Grade 3 students from across the Winnipeg School Division kick off I Love to Read Month and Black History Month on Feb. 1 at the Manitoba Children’s Museum.
The Clunises read from their book The Little Boy from Jamaica, which tells the story of how Devon Clunis emigrated from Jamaica to Winnipeg and eventually became the first Black Canadian ever appointed police chief in Canada. It’s a story of inclusion and diversity, and emphasizes the empathy and support that Clunis received from his teachers.
Clunis served as police chief from 2012 until his retirement in 2016.
