Visitors to the Norman Art Group’s upcoming spring show and sale will be treated to an outstanding selection of paintings from 24 different artists, according to Marion Timlick, the group’s co-treasurer.

The event will be held at the Church of St. Stephen and St. Bede (99 Turner Ave.) on May 12 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and May 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Timlick loves the Norman Art Group so much that she’s been attending the weekly gatherings for 24 years. While artistic talent runs in her family, she began spending even more time painting when she retired. She was introduced to the group by a former member, and she’s been coming ever since.

“We’re a very easygoing group,” Timlick said.

There are many benefits to spending time with other artists, Timlick said. They start with the opportunity to socialize with people who share an interest — there’s always something to talk about.

If someone is stuck and needs help, there are fellow artists with a wide range of experiences to ask for help. Someone is always willing to share a tip or two.

“We get together, learn from and teach each other,” Timlick said. “If someone wants some help, there’s always someone willing.

“It’s those little things to improve your art from someone else’s viewpoint. You look at it yourself, and you might not notice. But it’ll pop right up to someone else.”

Timlick recalls the first time someone offered to buy one of her paintings. She initially thought her husband was playing a trick on her. When she realized the offer was real, she was flattered.

It’s always interesting to hear why someone buys a certain piece of art. There’s usually something in it that resonates with the prospective buyer.

“Somebody else gets it,” Timlick said. “One of my favourite things used to be to hear why they’re buying that painting. The reasons are so diverse. There’s often something in that painting they can relate to.

“One picture had a sled in it. The purchaser said that she rode one of those to school when she was a little girl in Saskatchewan. It’s very gratifying.”

The show will feature watercolours, acrylics and some oils, Timlick said. There will be large and small paintings along with cards. Prices start at $50.

The Norman Art Group meets on Wednesday afternoons from 1 to 4 p.m. at St. Stephen and St. Bede. Annual membership dues are $65.
