Whoop & Hollar fest confirms lineup

The Whoop & Hollar Folk Festival is set to run in Portage la Prairie, Man., on the weekend of Aug. 26 and 26 with 15 acts on its roster.

Performers include Indian City, Heartsleeve, Marco Castillo, Madeleine Roger, Mark Reeves, Nelson Little and Christa Lucas, Deacon Creek, Jace Bodner, Violet Vopni, Dance in Ur Pantz, Kael Sauerborn, Shay Wolf, Bicycle Face, Rhea Goertzen, $2 Bill and his Bad Pennies and Lulu and the Tomcat.

In addition to the festival’s regular programming, workshops and tent camping at Cottonwood Acres, just outside Portage la Prairie, Whoop & Hollar is also offering a free community outreach event on Sunday, Aug. 27 at the Ukrainian Connection Bandstand in Portage la Prairie’s Island Park.

Remis Forum continues at Gwen Secter

The Lanny Remis Speakers’ Forum series continues this spring at Gwen Secter Creative Living Centre (1588 Main St.), running every Thursday at 11:45 a.m.

Upcoming speakers include:

• May 18 – Ben Carr, the Liberal Party of Canada nominee in the upcoming Winnipeg South Centre byelection will be looking to win the seat previous held by his late father, Jim, who died of cancer in December 2022. No date has yet been set for the byelection, but it must be called by June 11.

• May 25 – Stephen Wilson, the co-founder and executive director of Graffiti Art Programming, an art centre for urban youth which promotes community development, social change and the growth of its participants. Graffiti’s free, after-school art classes attract more than 5,000 participants each year and its exhibits and shows attract a further 14,000 visitors each year.

• June 1 – Author Myron Love will discuss and read from his latest book: The Wrong Time and the Wrong Place: Canadian Airmen Land in Buchenwald.

St. John’s class of ’73 reunion slated for June 23, 24

The St. John’s High School class of 1973 will hold its 50th anniversary reunion on June 23 and 24.

The weekend will include tours of the school, an informal meal at the Four Crowns Restaurant and Bar (1030 McPhillips Ave.), a free picnic in Kildonan Park and a dinner and social at Royal Canadian Legion 215 in East St. Paul.

Caution: construction ahead

Drivers in west Winnipeg should aware of these major road closures this summer:

• Salter Street — Salter is closed between Inkster Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue, including the west sidewalk, until Tuesday, Sept. 26 for the construction of new underground infrastructure as well as new northbound and southbound lanes, curbs and sidewalks;

• Pembina Highway – Pembina Highway between Chevrier Boulevard and McGillivray Boulevard will be affected by lane closures until Saturday, Sept. 30. Two lanes will remain open for southbound traffic at all times, while two lanes will be open to northbound traffic only during morning rush hour, with one northbound land remaining open at all other times. Winnipeg Transit buses will be re-routed during the closures.
