River City Ford is throwing its second annual Driving Change car show on June 17 on its dealership lot at (3636 Portage Ave. The show, which is billed as a “community hub” and features a barbecue, is a fundraising event to raise proceeds to improve intensive-care unit technology at Grace Hospital.
The current goal is to raise $10,000, double the amount of last year’s debut event
Organizers expect more than 200 cars after welcoming just over 100 last year, ranging from old classics to brand spankin’ new. The lot, currently full of dealership cars, will be cleared and filled anew for the show.
“Yeah, we have a lot of things going on that day,” said Kyle Forcier, general manager at River City Ford.
“We have a Touch a Truck event, fire trucks, police cars, and other vehicles from here, like trucks and Jeeps and Broncos.”
Admission is free, Forcier said, but donations will be accepted throughout the day. “We’ve always wanted to do something like (this) here,” he said. “We have a good partnership with Grace Hospital, we do two-three events (with them) within a year … We were like, ‘OK, what’s another way we can raise money? A car show, oh yeah.’”
For kids, there will be space for fair games and bouncy castles. Similar to last year, the Sturgeon Heights Collegiate football team has volunteered to wash cars.
Burgers, hotdogs and snacks will be donated by FoodFare, and Sargent Sundae is offering dessert afterwards.
Forcier believes people like coming to events like this.
“We’re open for a lot of people, it should be a good day,” he said.
River City Ford had already reached $3,000 of its fundraising goal as of June 7, thanks to support from Sparkpower, Freedom Fire, Sturgeon Heights Collegiate and others.
