Gandhi Peace Awards honour advocacy, community service

The Winnipeg-based Mahatma Gandhi Centre of Canada held its 2023 Mahatma Gandhi Peace Awards gala on Oct. 11, at RBC Convention Centre.

The 2023 recipients were Anita Anand, for her advocacy for victims of sexual abuse during her time as Canada’s minister of national defence, and Olena Zelenska, wife of Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy, for her fundraising and social efforts during the Russia-Ukraine war.

Several Winnipeggers were also honoured:

• University of Manitoba professor Joan E. Durant and Terry Duguid, MP for Winnipeg South, were recipients of the community development award;

• Sean Armstrong, Jagjivan Mistry, Anita Soni, Orion Remoquillo, and the India Association of Canada were recipients of the community service award;

• Adria Anha Alam, Rou Kohan, and Aarya Sakpal were the winners of the student essay competition, with each receiving a scholarship worth $1,000;

• Ane Cristina Figueriredo and Trixie Maybutuin were recipients of human rights scholarships, earning bursaries from the University of Manitoba.
