The Lord Selkirk-West Kildonan community committee met for a regular meeting on Feb. 29, at which it approved an application by Landmark Planning and Design, for the first phase of a large-scale development by Whiteland Real Estate to be located in West Kildonan’s city suburbs.

If completed, the proposed Polaris Place development will feature a giant apartment complex built on the vacant corner lot connecting McPhillips Street, North Point Boulevard, and Murray Avenue. It is projected to contain 760 living units spread out over 18 acres of land, located between West Kildonan and the Perimeter Highway, a five-minute drive, roughly, from the R.M. of West St. Paul.

The units are to be divided between six residential buildings — four five-storeys tall and two eight-storey structures. The plans also call for 1,160 parking spaces, private roads between the buildings, and greenspaces.

The Lord Selkirk-West Kildonan community committee approved plans for a huge, 760-unit residential building close to the perimetre last week.

The land was originally meant for agricultural use, expanding the urban presence of the area and the city.

Initial planning for this project has taken years, committee members remarked. Those living in the surrounding area were alerted and most have been receptive to the idea.

The committee, which is comprised of councillors Ross Eadie (Mynarski), Vivian Santos (Point Douglas) and Devi Sharma (Old Kildonan), was also optimistic that Polaris Place will increase the number of housing units in the area and thus help meeting increasing demand for housing in northwest Winnipeg.

“I believe that the developer here, Whiteland…, is demonstrating that this application will add to the diversity of housing in the area which is much needed,” Coun. Sharma said, in support of the application.

The committee also approved permits for several events, such as the 18th annual Soca Reggae Festival and the Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival, which will take place in June and July, respectively.
