The Macdonald-Headingley Recreation District has released its winter program, with different classes, and activities available to residents of all ages in Brunkild, Domain, Headingley, La Salle, Oak Bluff, Macdonald, Sanford, Starbuck, and surrounding areas.

New and returning programming will be presented in a number of community spaces, giving people the space and resources to play, move and create during the final weeks of this year and the beginning of 2025.

Examples include:

• Indoor pickleball, set to take place at the Headingley Community Centre (5353 Portage Ave.), Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9 p.m. and Thursdays and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. Equipment is available for beginners and registration is available for both drop-in — $2.50 — and monthly — $5 — rates. • Recreational badminton for those aged 13-and-up is scheduled for Starbuck. The weekly sessions will take place from Jan. 6 to March 24 — nine Mondays — from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Starbuck School. All skill levels will be welcome. The drop in fee is $5.

• Babysitter’s training will also take place in Starbuck, this time at the Starbuck Hall, on Sunday, Jan. 19. The course, available for kids 12-and-up, will teach the essentials of caring for a young one, as well as basic first-aid and how to handle minor injuries and emergencies. The registration fee is $60.

• The La Salle community choir will also be back in action, beginning Jan. 15. For 10 Wednesdays, the group will meet at St. Hyacinthe Parish (27 Rue Beaudry) from 7 to 8:30 p.m. No audition is required, and everyone aged 16-and-up is welcome to take part in a “supportive environment to express yourself through music.” Registration is $60.

• The Macdonald Services to Seniors will also be available throughout the winter. The service helps provide support to older residents through transportation, housekeeping, yard maintenance, help with filling out forms and accessing information, and more. STS also organizes a number of community events throughout the years through its Lunch & Learn program, such as a Genealogy 101 on Jan. 9 and 29 (at the Starbuck Hall and Sanford Legion, respectively) and Minds in Motion, for people with dementia and their caregivers, at the Sanford Legion on Jan. 16.

• The Oak Bluff Recreation Centre will also be hosting a kids drop-in called Fun Zone for 10 Tuesdays, from Jan. 14 to March 18. From 5:30 to 7 p.m., the space will be available for kids to “explore, create, and have fun on their own schedule.” The program is built for hands-on activities and social interaction, which encourages making friends and imagination. The drop-in fee is $20 and participants must have parental supervision during the programming, which will be facilitated by Laura Dunphy.
