Our local businesses are the backbone of our community. Whether it’s the café where we grab our morning coffee or the family-run manufacturer supplying local shops, these businesses create jobs, drive innovation, and keep our economy strong.
In today’s global economy, trade policies and tariffs often shape the challenges businesses face. While international trade plays an important role, we must also recognize the benefits of supporting Canadian businesses. Every dollar spent locally circulates within our community, fueling jobs, services, and future opportunities.
The Assiniboia Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Canadian, Manitoba and Winnipeg chambers, is committed to ensuring that local businesses have the support they need. Our advocacy committee works alongside industry leaders and policymakers to strengthen our economic landscape, promote fair trade, and create opportunities for sustainable growth.

Buying Canadian is about investing in people, ensuring that local businesses thrive, and ensuring that jobs remain in our communities.
“Supporting local businesses isn’t just about economics – it’s about community,” said Kristi Meek, president and executive director of the Assiniboia Chamber of Commerce. “When we choose Canadian products and services, we help sustain the businesses that employ our neighbors, support local initiatives, and contribute to the vibrancy of our economy.”
Buying Canadian isn’t just about the tariff wars – it’s about investing in people. It means ensuring that local businesses continue to thrive, that jobs remain in our community, and that we maintain the unique character of our neighbourhoods.
For businesses that carry American products and have yet to find Canadian alternatives, there are still ways to support the local economy. Consider sourcing other goods and services from Canadian suppliers, working with local distributors, and introducing complementary Canadian products alongside existing inventory. Engaging with advocacy efforts and educating customers on the benefits of buying Canadian can also make a meaningful impact. Not all these steps are possible for every business, but small steps add up, and even incremental changes help strengthen our local economy.
We encourage both businesses and consumers to think about the impact of their purchasing decisions. By choosing local, we contribute to a stronger, more resilient economy. To learn more about how the Assiniboia Chamber is advocating for our business community or to get involved, connect with us.
Together, we can make a lasting difference – one local purchase at a time.
