The City Centre community committee held a brief meeting on April 7.
The committee approved an increase of funds, up to $55,000 annually, to the West End BIZ for removal of graffiti throughout the area.
A motion was also approved and forwarded to the standing policy committee on property and development which, if approved by council, would give the city permission to access the premises of vacant buildings for the purposes of removing graffiti from abandoned homes and buildings.
Coun. Cindy Gilroy (Daniel McIntyre) also put forward a motion calling on the standing policy committee on public works to consider traffic calming measures at the corner of Ellice Avenue and Erin Street, owing to a number of accidents at that location over the years — 72 collisions in the past five years, according to data from Manitoba Public Insurance.
“We’re looking to see what we can do for added safety measures to that area for pedestrians and others,” Gilroy said.
The committee also approved a motion from Gilroy to have a pedestrian crossing installed on Westminster Avenue near Ethelbert Street.
A number of per capita grants were awarded to local community groups and institutions, including: Sikh Heritage Manitoba ($300) for heritage month activities, split evenly between all three City Centre wards; Gordon Bell High School ($300) for a bursary presented by Gilroy; École J. B. Mitchell School Parent Advisory Council ($1,000) towards the school’s family fun day; and the Italian Canadian League of Manitoba ($500) for cost of renovating its resource centre to be utilized as a classroom/multi-purpose room for a workshop and museum collection.
