On June 5, the Kiwanis Club of Winnipeg awarded four Vincent Massey Collegiate students with scholarships that ranged from $2,000 to $750.

The awards are meant to commemorate Key Leaders — members of the Kiwanis Club’s youth leadership program open to students in Grades 8 through 12 — for their achievements in community service, leadership and academic excellence.

This year’s recipients were Ava Coppinger, who received the Norman Velnes Memorial Scholarship; Sydney Fu and Abdurrehman (Abdu) Usman, who received the Kiwanis Matching Scholarships; and Adrian Binne, who received the Mel Osborne Youth Scholarship and a Kiwanis Matching Scholarship.

The late Norman Velnes was a “beloved Kiwanian” who championed youth service, according to a release, and the scholarship was presented by his widow, Margaret Livingstone.
