The Council of Women Winnipeg (CWW) celebrated a historic Manitoban with a special tree planting ceremony on June 26 — in the ground once home to the first hospital for children in the province, located in North Point Douglas.

With support from Trees Winnipeg, the Children’s Hospital of Manitoba Foundation, and the Children’s Hospital Guild of Manitoba, a Manitoba maple tree in honour of Annie Bond was planted at Michaëlle Jean Park.

Annie Bond helped found the first Winnipeg Children’s Hospital in 1909, which contained only 20 beds. Now, the Children’s Hospital of Winnipeg at Health Sciences Centre treats 140,000 to 150,000 patients — which hail from northwestern Ontario, Nunavut and Manitoba — every year, according to Mary-Beth Taylor, vice-president of philanthropy at the foundation.

“This is a very exciting time,” said CWW president Brenda Buleziuk, adding that it was the council’s 130th anniversary last year. “This tree will last hopefully another 130 years.”
