New basketball court open in Eaglewood Park
On Aug. 23, the Government of Canada, City of Winnipeg, and Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association officially opened a new, regulation-size court at Eaglewood Park.
According to a release, South Winnipeg has the largest WMBA catchment area but previously had no regulation courts to host games.
“This newly designed court now allows us to host WMBA summer youth league basketball games and tournaments right here in our own backyard, a first for South Winnipeg residents.” Carrissa Reyes, vice-president of Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association, said in a statement. “Basketball continues to grow in popularity — especially now with the rise of the Canadian Elite Basketball League and our very own Winnipeg Sea Bears.”
The court is now ready to host the 22-28 teams from south Winnipeg that register annually for the association’s spring and summer leagues. Construction of the court cost approximately $275,000, with the Government of Canada contributing $213,000 through its Canada Community Building Fund. Winnipeg’s Parks and Recreation Enhancement Program funded the remaining $62,000. The court will be maintained and managed by the city.
