Re: “Cruel to be caged: Calling ‘fowl’ on Big Egg,” Free Press Community Review West edition, Dec. 3, 2025: The recent article regarding a protest near a Winnipeg grocery store highlighted one group’s perspective and failed to provide an accurate depiction of the science-based standards in place on Canadian egg farms.
Egg farmers work tirelessly to ensure the health and well-being of their hens and deliver a reliable supply of eggs which are produced in various types of housing systems. This approach ensures consumers will continue to have access to a nutritious, high-quality protein source — at a variety of price points.
Regardless of the housing system, all regulated egg farmers must meet rigorous, science-based animal welfare and food safety standards, verified by mandatory inspections and regular audits.
Consumers can feel good about placing their trust in Canadian egg farmers and our approach to producing eggs.
