Map site has got west Winnipeg sled hills covered

No idea where to go tobogganing or sledding this January? No problem.

Mapping Winnipeg — well known for its interactive maps meant to help Winnipeggers find the best Christmas lights and Halloween decor, among other things — has released a handy list of which hills are best to sled on in West Winnipeg.

Happy sledding!

West Kildonan:

• Kildonan Park (2015 Main St.) has two toboggan slides, is well-lit at night;
• St. John’s Park (510 Main St.) has a safe slope that ends on the river;
• Vince Leah Park (1295 Salter St.) has a small hill with a gentle slope for the youngsters; and
• Adsum Park (434 Adsum Dr.) is another gentle option.

Wolseley:

• Omand Park (1430 Portage Ave.) has a gentle slope, located near the baseball diamond;
• Laura Secord School (960 Wolseley Ave.) has a small hill for toddler-aged sledders;
• Wolseley School (511 Clifton St.) has a small hill;
• William Marshall Park (at the end of Dominion Street) has a hill that leads onto the river;
• Robert A. Steen Community Club (980 Palmerston Ave.) has a fast hill located behind the building, which also leads onto the river.

St. James-Assiniboia:

• Westview Park (a.k.a. Garbage Hill) (1 Midland St.) has a large, wide hill with several different speeds to choose from. It also offers great views of the city skyline;
• Sturgeon Creek Parkway (at the end of Vimy Road, north of Hamilton Avenue) is a prime sledding location once the creek freezes over. The creek is also accessible via Woodhaven Park (1870 Assiniboine Ave.), for those looking for a faster ride; and
• Isbister Park (535 Hamilton Ave.) has two medium-sized hills.

Charleswood and River Heights:

• Roblin Park Community Centre (640 Pepperloaf Cres.) has a small hill and ice slides;
• Smithdale Park (3199 Vialoux Dr.) has a small hill;
• Assiniboine Park (accessible from Portage Avenue and Roblin Boulevard) has a sledding location just outside the Nature Playground and near the north side of The Leaf;
• Wellington Park (along Wellington Crescent) has a gentle slope near the baseball diamond;
• Central Corydon Community Centre’s Sir John Franklin site (1 Sir John Franklin Rd.) has a toboggan slide, as does its Crescentwood site (1170 Corydon Ave.); and ‘Big Bertha’ is the name of a hill at the end of Carmarthen Boulevard at Edgeland Boulevard.

Whyte Ridge and Fort Richmond:

• Whyte Ridge Community Centre (170 Fleetwood Rd.) has a small hill;
• Scurfield Park (3 Monticello Rd.) has a very large hill, and has been a popular choice in the community for some time;
• the Ken Oblik Greenway, near Waverley Street at John Agnus Drive, has a large slope;
• Kings Park (198 Kings Dr.) has a medium-sized hill; and
• Crescent Drive Park (781 Crescent Dr.) has a toboggan slide, which is well-lit at night.
