St. James-Assiniboia

The Assiniboia community committee held a brief regular meeting on Feb. 24.

Plans for a townhouse-style, multi-family development in Prairie Pointe, on the south side of Waverley Street between Youngstown Road and Firestone Drive, were approved. The development will include 12 buildings, with 59 units total, and 128 vehicle parking stalls and 20 bike stalls once complete.

Plans for a six-unit multi-family development at 199 Parkview St. were also approved. The site was previously home to a place of worship.

“I think this is great,” Coun. Janice Lukes (Waverley West) said in support of the project.

“I tend to agree,” added Coun. Shawn Dobson (St. James).

Plans were also approved for signage and exterior design for the commercial building at 100-3965 Portage Ave.

A community incentive grant of $128,656 for the Bairdmore Advisory Council towards the cost of the Bairdmore School play structure project was approved by the committee.

Finally, a pair of motions regarding stop sign relocation along the Harte Trail were also moved by the committee. The committee requested the stop signs at Elmhurst Road and Ridgewood Avenue and at Harstone Road and Glenbush Street be moved a few metres, to eliminate conflict between users of the trail and traffic, by having vehicles stop before the trail.

“These are problematic intersections,” Coun. Evan Duncan (Charleswood-Tuxedo-Westwood) said, noting there have been ongoing discussions with public service on improving safety in the area. “This (proposal) has received wide support from the community (and) users of the trail.”
