Ground broken on South Winnipeg Recreation Campus
Representatives from three levels of government broke ground on May 21 to mark the start of construction of a major community hub in southwest Winnipeg.
According to a City of Winnipeg release, the South Winnipeg Recreation Campus – a multi-use, multi-generational facility – will be built in phases. The first phase, which will feature a recreation centre that includes space for sports, recreation, fitness, and special events, and a wing for childcare, is being built using $127.5 million in tri-level funding.

The City of Winnipeg is investing $49.2 million towards Phase 1 construction. The Government of Canada is investing $31.7 million, and the province of Manitoba is investing $30.66 million.
Phase 1 will also include an addition to Pembina Trails Collegiate (50 Frontier Rd.) to support vocational programs, with the province providing $16.5 million in capital funding for this vocational wing, bringing its total project funding to $47.16 million.
The campus is expected to open in early 2028, and will also include gymnasiums, multi-purpose rooms, an indoor walking/running track, fitness area and café. Preliminary design work on the second phase will begin this year, including focus on a planned aquatic facility. There will be public consultation in early 2027.

Joie de Vivre choir to host 25th anniversary fundraiser
The Joie de Vivre choir will celebrate its 25th anniversary on Friday, May 29.
The event, which acts as a fundraiser will be held in the John de Brebeuf Parish Hall (1707 John Brebeuf Pl.) at 7:30 p.m. Silent and rainbow auctions will be held for prizes such as Hood & Dagger Productions tickets, Joie de Vivre concert tickets, chamois carwash, original artworks, the opportunity to be a guest conductor for a song, and more. Entertainment will also be provided.

Luxton-area community garage sale set for May 30
The Luxton Residents’ Association is preparing to host a community-wide garage sale on Saturday, May 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Area residents are invited to register their individual garage sales for that day, or apply to set-up a spot in Pollock Hardware’s Co-op’s parking lot at 1407 Main St.

Simkin Stroll set for June 2
On Tuesday, June 2, the Simkin Centre (1 Falcon Ridge Dr.) will host its annual Simkin Stroll.
The community event acts a fundraiser in support of the programs, experiences and facility enhancements. Residents, family, friends, and community members are invited to take part, with the goal of raising $200,000.
The Simkin Stroll will run from 4 to 8 p.m. and includes a barbecue, activities, and more. For more information, visit simkincentre.ca
