The most recent City Centre community committee meeting was held on June 23.

The committee recommended to the standing policy committee on property and development that an extension of time — subdivision and rezoning — be granted until June 27, 2027 for a property at 740 Holly Ave.

The committee approved plans for 1460 Corydon Ave. for a 17-unit mixed use, multifamily residential building with ground floor commercial space. The plan includes a total of 23 parking stalls, including once dedicated car share stall and one dedicated accessible stall.

The committee approved plans for 160 Ash St., with an amendment. The plan is a for a proposed five-unit townhouse building.

“With your input, we have designed a building that responds to the growing needs of the Academy area, and does it in a way that will provide a quality low-density housing solution that enhances the Academy streetscape,” said Jeff Del Buono, architect at Lola Construction Management.

The committee requested that the public service report on traffic calming measures on Ellice Avenue at Erin Street, including red light and speed cameras, and larger one-way signage and boulevard/barriers to better protect the south-west corner of Ellice Avenue and Erin Street.

The committee also requested that the public service report back in 60 days regarding the installation of a four-way stop control at the intersection of Downing Street and Yarwood Avenue in the Daniel McIntyre ward to improve pedestrian safety, support safer school routes, and provide consistency with nearby stop-controlled intersections.

The committee recommended to the standing policy committee on community services that an item of eligibility criteria be waived — a total City of Winnipeg contribution of 50 per cent or less — and that a community incentive grant for $59,416, funded from the River Heights-Fort Garry ward allocation, be approved to Fort Garry Community Centre to help with centre’s Victoria site tractor replacement project, subject to conditions. Coun. Sherri Rollins (Fort Rouge-East Fort Garry) said to Coun. John Orlikow (River Heights-Fort Garry) the two wards have a shared zone between the centre’s Hobson and Victoria sites and that the tractor will likely be used by both sites.

The committee approved a $50,000 community incentive grant to Churchill Park United Church to help with the cost of the South Osborne Commons building project, subject to conditions.

Rollins made a submission, in the form of a “retirement roast” and farewell tribute to Orlikow, the longtime councillor who announced recently he won’t be seeking re-election in the municipal election in October. It was received as information by the committee.

In the public hearings portion of the meeting, the committee approved a variance at 414-418 Gertrude Ave. for the construction of a mixed-use building to permit a lot area per dwelling unit of 302-square-feet, and the establishment of an accessory parking area to permit 16 spaces, subject to conditions.

The committee recommended to the standing policy committee on property and development a list of items relating to rezoning, variance, and conditional use at 626 and 628 Garwood Ave. in the Fort Rouge-East Fort Garry ward.
