Chess piece taken from Garden City Shopping Centre

Garden City Shopping Centre is hoping that the dark knight rises.

On Fri., June 6 at approximately 11 a.m., an individual stole one of the mall’s black knight chess pieces from the Abe Yanofsky Memorial Chess Set, an oversized chess game dedicated to the late Daniel Abraham “Abe” Yanofsky, a former mayor of West Kildonan, a member of the Order of Canada and Canada’s first chess grandmaster.

The suspect is described by witnesses as a five-foot-five white male, 12 to 15 years old. He was wearing a black shirt, blue jeans and a red and white ball cap. After exiting the mall, he headed east on Leila Avenue on foot.

The plastic chess piece is 30 inches in height and shaped like a horse’s head.
