Maples youngster shooting for the top

Three years ago this column reported on the amazing basketball achievements of  10-year-old Mekhi Dela Cruz Lisan.  

Mekhi is now a teenager and his star continues to shine brightly. He is an outstanding young athlete and considered a top Manitoba basketball prospect. Thus, it’s an excellent time to give an update on Mekhi’s  recent achievements.
In 2015, representing the Philippines Basketball Association Tykes division, Mekhi’s team won the FBA championship in Chicago. He also helped his Winnipeg Spirit team win the Junior Grand Am tournament in Grand Forks, N.D. His team also won two additional tournamentsIn 2016, Mekhi helped lead his Junior Bison team win the Mid-West Basketball League and he was named the league’s most valuable player. He also helped his team capture the Minnesota Youth Athletic Services championship in Minneapolis, Minn.  His team won four other tournaments that season.
In 2017, Mekhi’s team won the Junior Bison Grand Am championship, he was a member of the Amateur Athletic Union – Northern  Kings (a Toronto-based team), which won the Pitt Jam tournament in Pittsburgh, Penn., and Mekhi’s team finished second in the AAU Top Gun tournament in Toronto. 

Recently, he was named to the elite Canada Basketball/Manitoba Basketball Centre of Performance program. It’s a regional training centre that targets high potential basketball athletes.

“He loves the game and he works hard on the fundamentals. And he is always a good sportsman”, said Mike Lisan, Mekhi’s father.
Mekhi is a Grade 8 student at Amber Trails School. His hobbies include biking and video games and Kobe Bryant is his favourite player.
