Since Sept. 1, the Winnipeg Soccer Federation North Indoor Soccer Complex located on 770 Leila Ave. has been serving as a shelter for the residents of Wasagamack First Nation, Garden Hill First Nation and St. Theresa Point First Nation while the Canadian Red Cross, with the support of the city, led a full evacuation due to forest fires that devastated the area.

The Red Cross estimated that more than 3,700 people were evacuated and placed on the two shelters set up in Winnipeg — the first was set up at the RBC Convention Centre, which was closed on Thurs., Sept. 7 due to the availability of hotel rooms.

The shelter at the WSF complex is able to hold up to 900 evacuees and will remain open until further notice.
