Filipino Street Festival moves to the Maples

Winnipeg’s Filipino community loves to come together to celebrate life, culture and have a great time. One such coming together is the annual Manitoba Filipino Street Festival.
This year, the huge street parade and celebrations will be held on June 9 and 10 at Maples Community Centre Multiplex and on the expansive fields and grounds of the centre at 434 Adsum Dr.
“We are very happy to be back in the Maples, the heart of the Filipino community in Manitoba,” said Ley Navarro, chairman of the festival board.
The Manitoba Filipino Street Festival showcases the unique ways different regions in the Philippines celebrate diversity, growth and development.
From the inception of the festival in 2012, this colourful community celebration has been a success. This year, festival organizers are confident that, with a new venue and ample street parking, attendance will break records.
Some of the new and exciting additions to this year’s program include a series of centre stage cultural performances, a presentation by Filipino movie star Richard Gutierrez and comedian Eric Nicolas, both brought in from Manila by TFC (The Filipino Channel, a presenting sponsor of the festival).
There’s also the first annual Bunong Braso Tournament (Filipino-style arm wrestling) and the very entertaining Winnipeg Sikaran Arnis Academy Exhibition.
The community centre building will be the venue for Filipino movies and a mini-play by new immigrant students of Maples Collegiate will be presented for the first time.
Everyone, of course, is welcome to this free event.
