Pioneer Arena renamed Charlie Gardiner Arena

On Aug. 16, Hockey goalie Charlie Gardiner’s family unveiled a new sign that will rename Pioneer Arena to Charlie Gardiner Arena (799 Logan Ave.). Gardiner played with the Winnipeg Maroons of the Central Hockey League in 1926-27 and then joined the Chicago Blackhawks where he was a goalie for seven seasons. He died in St. Boniface Hospital on June 13, 1934 and is now buried in Brookside Cemetery.

“Charlie’s story is a very inspiring one,” said Edna Poulter, niece of Charlie Gardiner.  “As a family, we are so thankful for this opportunity to keep his memory alive and to bring inspiration to young athletes in Charlie’s former neighbourhood.”
