Garden City Shopping Centre to grow again

Garden City Shopping Centre recently announced another round of new retailers that will open in the newly-expanded and renovated mall later this year.

Crafters in our neighbourhood will be pleased that a brand-new Michaels store is being built, using a sizeable portion of the former Sears space. At over 22,000 square feet, the Michaels store will become a new anchor on the McPhillips Street side of the mall. 

In addition to being a craft supply supercentre, Michaels is also well-known for its many in-store creative classes, ranging from cake decorating to sewing. The arts and crafts retailer is a welcome addition to our area and brings a new creative side to shopping in Garden City. 

Greek food fans should be excited for Western Canada’s very first Mr. Souvlaki restaurant, which will open in the food court later this summer. Since opening its first location almost 20 years ago in Toronto, the take-away restaurant has grown and become known for hearty homemade Greek recipes made from scratch. It is always great to have a new option when grabbing a bite to eat.  

Also coming soon is a new Bulk Barn store, which is moving across the street and joining Michaels in the former Sears space. At over 5,000 square feet, this new location will be much larger that the current store and will be able to meet the needs of our growing area.  

Residents may have also noticed a sign at the corner of Leila Avenue and McPhillips Street, advertising a proposed East Side Mario’s restaurant. While not confirmed, the casual Italian eatery is indeed looking to open a location in the mall parking lot and is currently seeking prospective franchise partners.

I routinely hear from residents seeking new retailers and restaurants for the area. I have continued to advocate and share all your ideas — so please continue sending them. 

In the past few years, Garden City has developed a new energy and our local amenities continue to grow. We can be proud that out of all the former Winnipeg Sears stores, Garden City’s will be the first to be transformed. I am looking forward to more stores being announced this year as our shopping options continue to expand. Spring has indeed sprung in Garden City.
