With February here that means we have lots of great things going on in our community. First up was this weekend’s sixth annual Elmwood Winter Fun Day at Clara Hughes Recreation Park held on Feb. 8. Congratulations to the volunteers and organizers who made this free event a highlight of the winter.
Later this month, the Afro-Caribbean Association of Manitoba (ACAM) will be hosting its 21st annual Job and Career Fair. This important community event will be held Sat., Feb. 22 at Elmwood High School’s Senior Gym, at 505 Chalmers Ave., from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The fair has proven itself over the years to be an excellent opportunity for students and the general public to meet, and even apply for a variety of full-time and part-time jobs with 50 employers from a wide variety of Manitoba’s work force. Admission is free. If you have any questions, please call Jim Ogunnoiki at 204-663-7868 or Lauretta Boudreau at 204-291-9771.
In response to national reductions in allowable lead levels in drinking water, the City of Winnipeg recently launched a targeted water quality testing program, offering free water quality testing for residents who have lead water pipes. The City says the Elmwood-East Kildonan area has around 2,755 homes with lead pipes. Are you one of those 2,755 homeowners?
To find out if you are, you can easily identify lead pipes by checking the pipe fixture in your basement. You can visit the City of Winnipeg website to help you know what to look for at https://winnipeg.ca/waterandwaste/water/identifyingPipesFixtures.stm
If you do have lead pipes in your home, we want to know. My team and I at the Elmwood office are compiling data on this important community health issue, so please give us a call at 204-415-1122 or email me at Jim.Maloway@YourManitoba.ca
