I would like to wish all constituents of Burrows and folks across Manitoba a very Happy Sikh Heritage Month.
I would like to thank my friend and colleague, NDP leader Wab Kinew for introducing Bill 228, the Sikh Heritage Month Act in 2019.
Sikh constituents in Burrows and across Manitoba consider this bill historic as it represents all of their efforts and contributions within the community. This annual recognition would not have been possible without Sikh Heritage Manitoba, who were instrumental in lobbying for the bill’s passage into law.
Sikhs in Burrows and across Manitoba recently celebrated Vaisakhi, which marks the spring harvest in India and is the first day of the month of Vaisakh. Vaisakhi has religious significance for our community, since it is the day when Khalsa was born.
In 1699, Guru Gobind Singh chose the festival as a time to establish Khalsa, which is the collective name given to Sikhs who have been baptized. This time of year is often filled with vibrant colours, dance, and community events.
Owing to COVID-19, the Sikh community in the province and around the world are prevented from gathering to celebrate Vaisakhi. But, Khalsa Aid has found another way to honour this festival by serving 150 free food trays to staff at Seven Oaks and Grace hospitals, and will do the same for St. Boniface Hospital and the Health Sciences Centre.
The Sikh community remains grateful to have gurudwaras, which are places of worship, in Winnipeg. Gurudwaras are abiding by public health guidelines so folks can safely gather in smaller groups.
To all who celebrate in Burrows and across Manitoba — Happy Vaisakhi and Happy Sikh Heritage Month!
I wish everyone in the Sikh community a blessed, and prosperous year ahead. I am honoured to share this part of my life with Burrow’s constituents, and may this encourage everyone in the community to learn more about the faith, culture, and history of their neighbours.
I would also like to wish Happy Ramadan Kareem and Happy Navratri to Burrows constituents and all Manitobans celebrating.
In other news, our community spring cleanup in Burrows is currently operating on a bi-weekly basis, and we encourage constituents to call us and register as volunteers if you are able to join in.
