The Lord Selkirk-West Kildonan Community Committee held a special meeting on Oct. 2 to discuss the following:

• The committee approved a per capita grant in the amount of $200, funded from the Old Kildonan ward allocation, to Garden City Community Centre Inc. to assist with the cost of the 2018 carnival including giveaways, bouncers and a West Kildonan Honorarium.

• The Winnipeg Public Service recommended in September that an application in the amount of $3,000, from the Lord Selkirk – West Kildonan community committee land dedication reserve fund (Point Douglas ward), to assist Winnipeg Public Library with the renaming of the Sir William Stephenson Library program room project, be approved.

Coun. Mike Pagtakhan (Point Douglas) asked that the matter be filed for the time being.

• The committee affirmed its recommendation of March 13, 2018, and approved additional land dedication reserve funding from the Old Kildonan ward allocation, in the amount of $6,500, for a total of $41,500, to assist with the cost of the Seven Oaks Arboretum – new water service project.

Coun. Ross Eadie (Mynarski) said that the project received Mynarski ward funding of $35,000 and it went to tender because the bids were fairly high.

“The West Kildonan Horticulture Society…they serve and do great things in both of our wards (Mynarski and Old Kildonan). And I like to say thanks to my Old Kildonan colleague,” Eadie said.

•  The committee concurred with the recommendation of the Winnipeg Public Service and approved the application for land dedication reserve funding in the amount of $117,949.40, from the Lord Selkirk-West Kildonan land dedication reserve ($62,109.28 from the Mynarski ward allocation and $55,840.12 from the Old Kildonan ward allocation) to the West Kildonan Community Centre, to assist with the cost of the centre’s arena chiller project.

Eadie said this was an emergency situation. The community centre first had a problem with the compressor at the arena and then they found out they had to get a new chiller, which according to Eadie, is a substantial cost.

The funding is subject to a number of conditions. Coun. Sharma (Old Kildonan) noted that the money loaned from the Old Kildonan ward will be paid back in the new year, in January or February.

“These are great projects and they are necessary to do right now,” she said.

• The committee concurred with the recommendation of the Winnipeg Public Service, as amended, and approved the plans for Lot 1 Block Plan 59962 – Daylan Marshall Gate, subject to the condition that an ornamental wrought iron style or wood fence be constructed along the west property line abutting the surface parking area and that a continuous landscape hedge and/or granite boulders be installed along the west property line abutting the surface parking area.
