Valerie Tonner had a dilemma.
As a practising massage therapist with an extensive educational background, she should have been a paragon of health, right?
She wasn’t.

About five years ago, Valerie found herself in a pre-diabetic path of deterioration, brought on by poor Western eating habits, a busy family life and a sedentary lifestyle. As she approached middle age, she was about to become a statistic — a typically unhealthy North American.
After extensively researching proper health care and habits — what works, what doesn’t — she invigorated her life and career by becoming a health coach with the aim of delivering care to clients about their whole person, mind and body.
In 2013, she’s never felt better. She walked the talk and is reaping the benefits of more energy, focus and confidence. With renewed passion for healthy living, she wondered how to broaden her influence beyond her local St. Boniface practice at 296 Taché Ave.
Her answer lay in the potential of global collaboration and the worldwide web. For four years, Valerie has built and maintained a website blog called Health Coach and it’s getting some serious action – at last glance almost a quarter-million hits.
The website has earned world-wide acclaim as a go-to source for insight and discussion about healthy living ideals. In June, the site earned an award as one of the Top 100 health coach blogs in the world from the Institute for the Psychology of Eating.
The site includes a stimulating blog, case studies of people on journeys of self-improvement, interviews with non-traditional healthcare thinkers, comprehensive research about the latest trends and happenings in the world of health care and, most importantly, fact-based strategies that promote healthy lifestyles.
Valerie believes that “people need to better understand their bodies and how to keep them healthy. Illnesses are getting more serious.”
Valerie’s work could not be more timely.
The Public Health Agency of Canada reports that the average Canadian will spend more than a decade of his or her life dealing with diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure or cancer.
While she appreciates the work of medical practitioners, she notes that“no pill, cure or therapy replaces basic health habits. Most people believe that it’s easier to take a pill than to get healthy and it’s really not.”
She works with clients of all ages. She has a special interest in seniors and how they may live their remaining years in the best possible health. Every massage comes with inspiring stories about people featured on the website who have changed their lives with proactive health habits. One day, you could become one of them.
Her clinic offers some specialty treatments such as Thai Massage Bodywork and Deep Heat Stone Therapy.
